Ex-Johnston Co. teacher sentenced on child sex charges

SMITHFIELD, N.C. -

A Clayton man charged with sex crimes has been sentenced to a minimum of 50 years in prison and a maximum of 61 1/2 years in Johnston County Superior Court.

Paul Canally, a former seventh grade science teacher at Archer Lodge Middle School, was charged with multiple sex crimes involving a minor. He was employed from August 20, 2007, until resigning in July 27, 2009. According to reports, the incidents occurred between April 2010 and December 2011.

Canally pleaded guilty to 37 charges, including second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Canally faced multiple charges of sex offenses with a minor, including:

  • Second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor
  • Statutory rape
  • Indecent liberties with a child
  • Sexual battery
  • Sex offense with a student

Authorities said some of the victims, whose ages ranged between 13 and 15, were students at Archer Lodge Middle School, where Canally was employed at the time of the alleged incidents.

Officials say the offenses did not occur at the school, but rather at the suspect's home.
