Fire Leaves Officer and Wife Homeless

Posted: Updated:

A Vicksburg officer and his wife are homeless after a fire destroys their home Sunday morning.

The blaze broke out on Pleasant Valley Drive, right outside the city early Sunday morning. Officer Dewayne Powers was on patrol, but his wife was home at the time. She escaped with no injuries.

Authorities say the fire started in the kitchen, but they don't know what started it. They do not suspect arson.

Powers lives at the home with his wife. He also grew up in the same house.

Powers has been on the force for 3 years. His co-workers are taking up donations. A car wash will be held all day Saturday at the Pizza Hut Clay Street. The proceeds will go to Powers.
