The Office of the State Auditor’s Performance Audit Division (PAD) regularly performs a limited review of the accuracy and reliability of student and personnel data transmitted to the Mississippi Department of Education for the purpose of determining funding for school districts. This spring, they conducted a review at the Jackson Public School District.
Reviews were conducted at the following schools: Bates Elementary, Lake Elementary, Lee Elementary, McLeod Elementary, Oak Forest Elementary, Sykes Elementary, Wilkins Elementary, Woodville Heights Elementary, Cardozo Middle, Chastain Middle, Kirksey Middle, Northwest Middle, Peeples Middle, Forest Hill High, and Provine High.
Each of these reviews looked at the following subjects: student enrollment, student attendance/ absenteeism, graduation (high schools only), school attendance reporting, reporting of suspensions, posting of historical documents, teacher endorsements, textbooks, safety, property internal controls, and vehicles.
In each of these areas, the Auditors determine if the schools (and the district in certain cases) have proper written policies, if they are reporting accurately, and if they are following that policy.
Performance audit also include a response from that school district.
