17-year-old Arrested for Capitol Murder in Body Dumping Case

Posted: Updated:

Jackson Police arrested a 17-year-old for the murder on Wednesday night.

Investigators are saying Diallo Vaughn, 17, was found with the maroon Impala they were searching for. The arrest happened in the 100 block of Archer Drive.

That vehicle may have been the target in a carjacking that left one person injured and another dead.

Authorities report the violence started Wednesday night at Cedarstone Apartments off Briarwood Drive.

"I heard a noise last night and I thought it was just someone slamming their door hard. And I looked out the window and saw a van driving by or possibly an SUV," apartment complex tenant Frank McGriggs said.

One person, 20-year-old Deangelo Morment, was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police report he was shot in the arm and shoulder.

22-year-old Orlando Morment's body was found Wednesday afternoon off the Southbound Frontage Road along I-55.

Neighbors say he goes by the alias "Bamwa" Morment.

Public Information Officer Colendula Green tells WJTV that the investigation was slowed because Deangelo Morment told authorities different versions of his story.

"We had two, actually three different stories. The first story initially being that the victim didn't know what happened," Ofc. Green said.

Now an arrest has been made but some neighbors are still worried about more violence.

"It surprised me because it could be me next. That's why it surprised me. You know, you don't want to live in no neighborhood where you've got to carry a gun and be afraid too," Paul Johnson, a tenant at Cedarwood Apartments, said.

Police have not said if they believe their suspect worked alone.

It is also unclear if Orlando Morment was shot before or after he was dumped on the side of the street.
