The controversial open carry gun law in Mississippi has been blocked by a Hinds County judge. Circuit Judge Winston L. Kidd issued an injunction at a last minute hearing, temporarily halting the new law from taking effect Monday.
Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith filed the challenge after receiving complaints from citizens. "As people realized this law was going into effect, we got more and more calls," Smith said. "We had to do something."
Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis is concerned about anyone openly carrying a firearm. "If it's unconstitutional to drink and drive, we should ask about drinking and having a gun," Lewis said. "Just imagine a traffic stop and the officer sees a gun in the car, that could be dangerous for the driver and the officer."
