A family in Florence who suffered a tragedy last week needs your help starting over and building a new home.
Pulling apart melted plastic to get to the memories inside a photo album, Shirley Pressey can't keep the tears from streaming down her face. She found pictures from her oldest son's senior prom and graduation inside the charred rubble that was her home. Shirley, her husband Jim, two children and niece lived there for seven years.
"I heard a big pop, and I jumped up, and I ran back in the kitchen, and it was going up the wall," says Jim Pressey.
The house caught fire the night of June 20. Jim was the only one home. Now, the family of five is starting over.
"We're looking for a travel trailer that would sleep six that we could put on the property, because this is all we have," says Shirley Pressey.
But the Presseys are getting some help from the community. Aaron Welborn went to school with Shirley's oldest son. He started a bank account where you can make a donation.
"The accounts are set up under "The Pressey Family", and you can just go to any Bancorp South in the Metro Jackson area," says Wilborn.
The family plans to demolish what's left of the house and build on the same foundation. Every penny counts, especially considering that the Presseys could not afford homeowners insurance and will pay for everything themselves.
Shirley says she regrets not having insurance and warns other homeowners not to make the same mistake. She says she knows the family will make it out of this tragedy just fine.
"The Lord has already provided everything, as we need it each step of the way. And people, we've never been involved in a community that was so caring," she says.
TO HELP THE PRESSEY FAMILY: Visit any Bancorp South in the Jackson Metro and tell them you'd like to contribute to "The Pressey Family".
