Chokwe Lumumba has been officially sworn in as the Mayor of the Capitol City. Mayor Lumumba’s first order of business was to appoint Lindsey Horton as the Interim Jackson Police Chief and Willie Owens as the Interim Jackson Fire Chief. Mayor Lumumba has the following to say:
“The people of our great Capitol City deserve a seamless transition and a continuation of all governmental operations. Public safety ranks high amongst public concern and these appointments reflect my position to quickly restore a sense of safety to the city.”
“Chief Horton has the skills and the respect of his Department. These qualities make him an ideal candidate to uplift the morale of our officers and staff. I am confident that he will diligently meet the tasks as Jackson’s top law enforcement officer.”
“Chief Owens’s loyalty to and longevity with the Fire Department demonstrates that he is a consummate public servant. He will be a strong and steadfast leader for the courageous first responders of the Jackson Fire Department.”
Chief Horton has over 30 years of experience with the Jackson Police Department. At the time of his appointment, he served as a Deputy Chief within the Department. Chief Owens served the Jackson Fire Department for almost thirty-one (31) years before he retired in 2005 as a Division Chief.
Both appointments await confirmation by the Jackson City Council.
