An $18,000 grant has allowed the Picayune school system to buy new ovens and put in place a program of healthier meals for its students at Picayune Junior High School and West Side Elementary School.
Debra Byrd, food service director for Picayune School District, tells the Picayune Item that two new oven steamers will replace the deep fat fryers. Byrd says the oven steamers are fast cooking.
Federal guidelines call for more fruit and vegetable choices. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade will have a choice of six fruit and vegetable choices.
Byrd says there will be more dark green, red and orange vegetables along with more beans and peas.
Byrd says the school district is looking to implementing the new ovens into other schools.
