Contractor bidding is now closed for the new Jackson County Adult Detention Center, but of the 10 contractors, Cadell Construction Company of Montgomery, Ala., is the lowest bidder at $27.1 million.
The Sun Herald reports the bids were opened Monday at the Jackson County Services Complex by Chancery Clerk Terry Miller.
The Jackson County Board of Supervisors has estimated they will need to borrow about $30 million for the construction of the new jail.
The board will take all bids under advisement and then determine who will win the contract.
The new jail will house 730 beds in a pre-built modular style that contains pods and a guard station at the center of each pod so the guards can better see into the cell without invading privacy.
