Tracking Chantal

Posted: Updated:

The third tropical cyclone of the 2013 hurricane season formed just prior to 11pm on Sunday, July 7th.  It was named Tropical Storm Chantal.

As it tracked across the Caribbean Sea, fast moving upper-level winds ripped apart the closed circulation of Tropical Storm Chantal.  As a result, the National Hurricane Center has downgraded Chantal to a tropical wave of moisture and gusty winds. As of 5pm on Wednesday, July 10th, the latest (and last) advisory on Chantal reveals maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and a westward movement of 23 mph.

The latest forecast models and National Hurricane Center show the remnant moisture of Chantal making a turn toward the northwest.  Heavy tropical rains will likely move into Florida by the weekend.  Forecast models beyond the weekend are so uncertain that it is difficult to say how much of this remnant tropical moisture will work up the Eastern Seaboard.  Therefore, Storm Team 9 will continue to track this remnant moisture from Chantal and keep you updated with the latest forecast information on this remnant tropical moisture with Chantal.

Of course, with all of the recent rainfall we've had, additional tropical downpours would not be welcome in eastern NC.

Although the National Hurricane Center will not continue to issue official forecasts on Chantal, Storm Team 9 will continue to monitor the remnant moisture.
