Reconstruction begins on burned Glenwood South Hibernian

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A little more than six months after the building nearly burned to the ground, reconstruction began Monday on an iconic downtown Raleigh restaurant.

A grease fire in the kitchen of the Hibernian set the pub ablaze the day after Christmas, destroying the popular establishment on Glenwood Avenue.

The building was a total loss, but Monday, reconstruction started on a new restaurant in its original location.

Owner Niall Hanley says it will look like the original, but will also have a two-story layout and rooftop bar.

The restaurant is expected to reopen by Christmas 2014.

Nearly 13 years ago, Hanley opened Hibernian Pub on Glenwood Avenue. In the years since then, the pub has been a fixture in the revitalization of Glenwood South and ultimately downtown Raleigh.

In addition to the Glenwood location, Hanley owns a Hibernian restaurant in Cary and in March opened a third pub in north Raleigh. He also owns Solas restaurant and lounge on Glenwood South and Dos Taquitos Xoco in the nearby Creamery Building.

Hanley also acquired the space in Raleigh Mordecai neighborhood once occupied by Rosie's Plate. He plans to open a brew pub in that building.
