McCrory says he'll veto existing abortion bill if passed by House

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Pat McCrory says he will veto the current abortion bill unless significant changes and clarifications are made.

According to a release sent out Wednesday morning, McCrory will veto HB 695 if it is passed by the House and Senate.

The release states that McCrory believes major portions of existing bill  are of "sound principal and value," but is working with lawmakers to "ensure that the bill's goals and objectives are clearly to protect the health and the safety of women."

The release cites the comments by Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos on Tuesday to a House committee.
Wos said she was worried about provisions directing regulators to develop abortion clinic standards similar to those used to regulate outpatient surgery centers. McCrory said earlier this week he wanted to make sure the health and safety of women are protected, not restricting abortion access.
The bill is in the House after it was voted on quickly by the Senate last week.

A House panel's meeting regarding the bill drew hundreds of protesters Tuesday morning.
