Toxicology results back, special prosecutor appointed in Bettis case

NEW BERN, N.C. -

There's new information in the court case involving New Bern's mayor.

Back in May, police charged Lee Bettis with driving while impaired after 911 callers said he was driving all over the road.

Bettis blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer test. So officers took a blood sample and sent it to the State Bureau of Investigation to test for other substances.

That report is back and shows a drug found in Xanax.

Also Wednesday, Craven County's district attorney announced a special prosecutor will take the case.

Bettis is due in court next week.
