Urban farm grows fresh produce in downtown Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. -

In the middle of all the concrete and pavement, some of the freshest produce is being grown in downtown Raleigh.

It's a one acre lot known as the Raleigh City Farm.

They grow everything from corn to tomatoes.

On Saturday, volunteers from a local nonprofit called Change the Triangle spent the day harvesting and weeding the gardens.

The group also built some new garden beds.

Workers say the urban farm helps teach others about how to grow their own produce and provides people and businesses downtown with fresh, local produce.

"It was started by a group of individuals that you know believe in food security and bringing food production back to the city and making sure any and everybody has access good and healthy food," explained Thomas Thornton with Raleigh City Farm.

"I think it's pretty unique and very interesting to see something like this in a setting where it is, and for me I think it's tremendous," said Christopher Chuck, event captain and volunteer with Change the Triangle.

Raleigh City Farm is hosting volunteer work days throughout the summer. You can find out more about Raleigh City Farm here.
