BRISTOL, TN (WJHL) -

Bristol, Tennessee Police are trying the find the people operating what investigators think is a multi-state crime ring targeting car dealerships in the Tri-Cities and communities in other states.

They're stealing tires off cars on dealership lots, hidden by the darkness of night.   And the lead investigator on the case says the thieves appear to be targeting specific cars on a lot. "I really believe they were filling an order," said Investigator Brian Hess, Bristol, TN Police.

The most recent crime happened June 16th in Bristol, Tennessee.   Employees at the dealership discovered eleven cars had been jacked-up, all the tires and rims removed.

Police think the tire robbers drove through a nearby cemetery, parked a large truck near the dealership fence, cut a hole in the fence, and hoisted the tires over the fence to the waiting vehicle.

"You're talking about wheels that weigh between 80 to 100 pounds, and that was 44 tires and wheels they threw over those fences," Hess said.

Bristol isn't the only community where a dealership has been targeted in a similar way.   "It's not just localized to Bristol," said Hess.  "Washington County, Virginia had a similar incident this past weekend.  Statesville, North Carolina and Roanoke, Virginia.   It's like somebody is just going up the interstate heading north."
