MADISON - They're no scratch golfers but Mississippi State Head Football Coach Dan Mullen and his Southern Miss counterpart Todd Monken took part in the Friends of Children's Hospital Pro-Am at Annandale Golf Club as we count down to Thursday's first round of the PGA's Sanderson Farms Championship.
Individuals who will be playing in Wednesday's Trustmark Wealth Management Pro-Am include: New Orleans Saints Coach, Sean Peyton and Ole Miss Head Football Coach, Hugh Freeze.
Additionally, Sammy Winder will play in the Wednesday Pro-Am in lieu of New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager, Mickey Loomis, who regrets he can no longer attend. Winder, a Mississippi Sports Hall of Famer, played football at USM where he led the nation in scoring in 1980 with 20 touchdowns. He still holds the USM career record for touchdowns with 39. After college, Winder was drafted by the Denver Broncos where he continued his legacy by becoming 2nd all-time Broncos touchdown scorer. He has played in three Super Bowls (XXI, XXII, XXIV). Archie Manning also regrets that he will no longer be able to play in the Wednesday Pro-Am. Pro-Ams give amateur golfers, more so than any other sport, the opportunity to play with professional players. By incorporating local celebrities into the tournament, Mississippi golf enthusiasts get a chance to play like a pro.
In addition to the Monday and Wednesday events, local Junior golfers will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to play with professional PGA TOUR golfers in The Bank Plus Friends of Children's Golf Junior Pro-Am starting at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. This event is open to the public with free admission. Spectators will need to park in their designated parking area and shuttles will take them to the Health Matters Welcome Pavilion. Concessions will be available at the Putting Green.
The Sanderson Farms Championship is one of only 45 PGA TOUR tournaments held each year. The tournament has been part of the PGA TOUR schedule since 1968 and is now in its third year as part of the FedEx Cup.
This event has raised more than $7.3 million for statewide charities. Past champions of the tournament include defending champion Scott Stallings, Chris Kirk, past FedExCup Champion Bill Haas and Luke Donald.
The Sanderson Farms Championship will be held July 18-21, 2013, at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
