Funeral arrangements are pending for a Jackson police officer who was killed in the line of duty.
Right now the investigation continues into the weekend I-55 crash that killed 35 year old officer Bruce Jacob.
Assigned to the 4th precinct in Northeast Jackson, Jacob would have celebrated his 36th birthday July 30th. He leaves behind a wife.
Chief Lindsey Horton says the department will have to examine policies to determine if changes are needed to prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
Why was Jacob all alone in the middle of the busy interstate? Did he call for back-up? Were their other officers available to assist him?
"But understand officer Jacob did nothing wrong or anything improper…," Horton said in a Sunday news conference. "And if there is any blame out there, it should go to the other motorists," he said.
Meantime an eyewitness tells us what he heard and saw in the moments after the incident. "I heard a woman screaming…and people jumping out of their cars and running in the median…" said store clerk Irvin Sandhu.
