A new day at Spartan Square

SALEM, VA -

Today Quiznos confirmed it has shut its door for good, the latest of several closings at the Spartan Square Shopping Center.

"I had no idea that Quiznos was closing, no idea that the shoe store was closing, no idea that the karate place was closing or the fitness center, but they're all gone," says Wanda Waltz who works at the Hallmark in the shopping center.

In an effort to fill the vacant spots at the shopping center, owner, Luke Waldrop, says they have some big plans in the works.

"We've been here since 1976," says Waldrop. "We need more pizzazz to make us better and better every day."

Pizzazz that's coming in the form of a new marquee that Waldrop says he hopes lets customers know about all of the stores at Spartan Square, including many of the ones that are hidden from view by the Verizon Wireless Center.

"The way things work now, all centers have something out front," he says. "Similar to next door with the Chick-Fil-A going in there. And these people, it's sort of inevitable."

He hopes the new sign will bring in new businesses to help anchor the center. Work to breathe new life into the area has already begun. The Wells Fargo ATM has been moved from the front corner to right in front of the Kroger gas pumps.

It's a plan that will continue as they work to fill the empty spaces and construct new businesses.
