Ten businesses open on Williamson Road for 50 years or more

Posted: Updated:
ROANOKE, VA -

Williamson Road has seen it's share of ups and downs, but we've discovered at least 10 businesses that have been on the road for 50 years or more.

Talk to anyone working at "Northwest True Value Hardware Store" on Williamson Road and it'll be hard to find an employee who hasn't worked there longer than 15 years.

Store president Charlie Overstreet says he's seen many businesses come and go on Williamson Road, but the street has been to home to his store for more than 40 years.

"Williamson Road has evolved through the years," Northwest Hardware President, Charlie Overstreet says. "It's a good spot to do hardware and it's a good place to do business."

Magic City Ford is celebrating 75 years of business this year and 53 of which, have been on Williamson Road.

"It shows the longevity," Wendy Jones, Williamson Road Area Association executive director says. "It also shows the sustainability of Williamson Road. These businesses that have been here 50 plus years. They've seen the not so highs, the highs, and the past 5 years have seen some real changes."

"I've seen a lot of growth just in the past few years I've been the president," Cameron Johnson, Magic City Ford President. "We hope Williamson Road continues to do really well because that means we can do really well."

Some of the businesses have been passed down from generation to generation including Magic City Ford. Who is now on their fourth generation of owners. Statistics show only 3% of family businesses ever make it to the fourth generation.

"I'm so fortunate my great-grandfather and my grandfather started the dealership back in the 1930's and it's been in my family for 75 years now," Johnson says.

A legacy many hope will continue not just for more businesses on Williamson Road in the future.

Here's the complete list. Please e-mail reporter Katie Love if your business has been around for longer than 50 years. klove@wsls.com
