Giles Co. school offers free lunch for community

GILES COUNTY, VA -

School is out but students are in at Narrows High School.

"We often worry about some of our kids not being able to eat properly through the summer," said Assistant principal Scott Meade. Monday through Friday, there's no need to worry.

Giles Elementary which has a minimum 50% of its students on free or reduced lunches through the school year, qualified for a U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Health grant to help feed them over summer break.

More than 70 volunteers take over the cafeteria to make it happen. They hoped to feed 50, but quickly surpassed that. "Some days we have 160, 170 plus adults," Meade said.

Jessica Bowles brings her daughters for a hot lunch every day during the week. "It's just nice to have it for the kids who really need it and for us too."

School officials also opened the lunch to adults, only requiring them to pay $2, the actual food cost, to eat. "In hopes that we would get more kids here, that adults would bring their children with them. So that's why we did that," Meade said.

Both kids and adults come in, especially on certain days when the cooks are especially busy baking for Hot Dog Thursdays. "We have outstanding cooks here. They actually make their own hot dog buns." There are also crafts and activities for the kids after lunch, giving them time to socialize with their classmates when they're not in class.

Volunteers also use donations to provide transportation for people who can't get to school for lunch.
