Greenville Schools Eliminate JROTC Program

A loss of funding has prompted the Greenville School Board to drop the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Program.

Federal funds had provided $50,000 a year for the program.

School district spokesman Everett Chinn tells the Delta Democrat Times that the school system can reapply for funding in five years.

Chinn says about 30 students from T.L. Weston Ninth Grade Academy and Greenville-Weston High School participated in the training corps.

Chinn says administrators hope that if the district regains funding for the program that participation will be more robust.

He says the district also may partner with the Civil Air Patrol in the future. The CAP runs a cadet program for youth.
