KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

It's almost time for students to head back to school in Tennessee and when they do a new set of standards will greet them in class.

Tennessee is one of 45 states to adopt the new federal standards for learning called Common Core.

Common Core State Standards in math and language arts will push students to think more critically and become better problem solvers.

Teachers in Kingsport City Schools have been preparing for the new standards for two years.

Assistant Kingsport Superintendent, Dory Creech, said the new curriculum hopes to make students more competitive with their peers in other districts and countries.

"The whole intention behind common core is to help all children become college and career ready," said Creech.

Neighboring Virginia is one of five states that have not adopted Common Core State Standards.
