PEARL - Ian Thomas worked seven shutout innings and held the Jackson Generals to two hits while Christian Bethancourt turned in a perfect 4-for-4 night at the plate to claim a 4-0 victory for the Mississippi Braves. With the win, the M-Braves also secure the series victory before heading out on a 10-game road trip.
Thomas (7-7) shutout the Generals, allowing just two hits in seven frames while striking out nine. Bethancourt singled in the bottom of the first to tie the M-Braves on-base streak record of 38 games which was set by Willie Cabrera in 2009. Bethancourt's streak dates back to June 13. The hit also extended his current hitting streak to 14 games.
Mississippi (27-23, 65-55) scored four runs on six hits while Jackson (22-25, 51-62) managed two hits and committed one error. Bethancourt's two-homer day is his second multi-homer game of the year. He drove in three runs.
At two hours and four minutes, the game was the shortest nine-inning contest of the season for Mississippi but seven minutes too long of being the shortest game in M-Braves history. That record was set at 1:57 on May 8, 2010.
Jose Martinez launched a solo homer, his sixth long ball of the season, in the bottom of the second to put the M-Braves out front 1-0.
Mississippi took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Bethancourt blasted a solo homer to left, his ninth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bethancourt blasted a two-run home run to extend the Braves lead to 4-0. Dan Brewer had reached on an error by the shortstop to start the inning.
Anthony Vasquez (1-2) tossed a complete game but suffered the loss. He gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits, three home runs and a walk while fanning five.
The M-Braves take a day off before hitting the road for 10 games. In game one of a five-game series at Pensacola, M-Braves right-hander Aaron Northcraft (6-8, 3.60) counters Blue Wahoos righty Jon Moscot (1-0, 6.30). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
