A traffic stop in Gautier has ended with a man charged with several counts of dog fighting.
Officials with the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team tell the Mississippi Press that Joseph Bates of Georgia was pulled over Thursday on Interstate 10.
Investigators say Bates had pit bulls and other breeds of dogs in cages in his truck bed. Some of the dogs had wounds and one was severely injured with bite wounds on its face, neck and legs.
Bates was charged with 7 counts of dog fighting and 9 counts of animal cruelty. Additionally, he was charged with 9 counts of failure to provide rabies shot records.
The dogs were taken to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, and Bates was taken to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.
