State police investigate fatal crash in Bedford Co.

BEDFORD COUNTY, VA -

UPDATE: This story has been updated to correct information about the crash victim. James Gunter was a passenger, not the driver. Additionally, State Police says that the driver of the car was charged with DUI. They have identified him as Steve Malotey Oulds III, age 52, of Lynchburg.

The Virginia State Police continue to investigate a fatal traffic crash that happened Sunday evening around 5:30 p.m. on Route 501.

The crash happened about one and a half miles south of Route 651 in Bedford County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1994 Mercedes Benz E420 was traveling northbound on Route 501 when it ran off the right side of the road, hitting a guard rail before overturning.

The passenger James Dale Gunter, 53, of Lynchburg, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details are available at this time.
