BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -

The oldest son of rocker John Mellencamp surrendered for arrest Monday on charges of punching and kicking a 19-year-old man in southern Indiana.

Hud Mellencamp, 19, was released on bond after being booked early Monday in Monroe County, Ind., on the felony battery charges. Hud Mellencamp's 18-year-old brother, Speck Mellencamp, bonded out of jail on the same charges Friday.

Authorities say Speck Mellencamp entered the porch of a Alexander Bucy's Bloomington home and punched him in the face July 29, believing that Bucy had hit him earlier that evening.

Court documents say the brothers and 19-year-old Ty A. Smith "punched, kicked and stomped" Bucy, who suffered facial fractures and received stitches at a local hospital.

Speck Mellencamp told officers he had been at a party at the Bucy's home earlier when two girls began fighting over him, and that a white male punched him as he tried to stop the girls' fight. Speck Mellencamp said his assailant ran into the house.

He said he "was very upset about being punched" but soon left and went home, where he, his brother and Smith decided to return.

Hud Mellencamp is a sophomore cornerback for Duke University's football team. He walked on to Duke's football team in 2012 as a freshman.

Hud Mellencamp did not see game action in 2012.

In a statement issued Thursday night, Duke football coach David Cutcliffe acknowledged the charges against Hud Mellencamp.

"Currently, we are giving him the opportunity to return to Indiana to address his legal issues," Cutcliffe said. "We will refrain from any further comment until more information becomes available."

According to Duke Athletics' website, Hud Mellencamp was a two-time Golden Gloves division boxing champion in Indiana and Junior Olympics state boxing champion.

John Mellencamp's publicist has declined comment. The singer lives near Bloomington, 50 miles south of Indianapolis.
