Mont. Co. Sheriff's office has seen an increase in meth crimes

MONTGOMERY COUNTY -

Methamphetamine is a drug that is a growing problem throughout Montgomery County.

"We've found laboratories in vehicles, we've had individuals going in convenient stores and going to the bathroom of convenience stores with items to make methamphetamine," says Captain Brad St. Clair with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

In 2012, the sheriff's office responded to 10 meth labs with 32 total charges and through July of this year they've responded to 31 meth labs with 76 charges.

There has also been a spike in other crimes too like breaking and entering, larceny, and assaults.

"Anytime drugs are involved in the community crimes go up and so to decrease the number of crimes is to target that drug community and try to get the drugs out of the system," says Captain Robert New with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says to help fight the problem, it pulled three people from the patrol division.

Although having more staff could help, it's something the sheriff's office can't do now since the Commonwealth's Compensation Board controls the budget.

"We're only appointed a certain number of positions suited through the compensation board and so we're full," says Capt. St. Clair.

Although the numbers of charges have increased since last year, the sheriff's office says it is working hard to train staff to be able to spot it quicker than before.
