The City of Jackson will host a series of town hall meetings to discuss a proposed water and sewer rate hike.

The Clarion-Ledger reports the first is scheduled for Wednesday at Anderson United Methodist Church South.

Water rates would rise 29 percent under the proposal, from $2.48 to $3.21 per 100 cubic feet, or 748 gallons. Sewer rates would more than double, from $2.15 to $4.47 per 100 cubic feet. With those rates, the average sewer bill would go from $15 to $31, while the average water bill would increase from $15 to $21.

The administration says the hikes are necessary to meet its bond obligations, handle maintenance needs and position the city to tackle a $400 million consent decree from the EPA.
