Ticket sales brisk for gun raffle for Wilson elementary school

LUCAMA, N.C. -

A raffle for an elementary school in Wilson County has created a controversy after one item being raffled off is a gun - but ticket sales have been brisk.

The local chapter of the Delta Waterfowl wanted to help Lucama Elementary raise funds, and the so group is donating a black powder muzzle-loading gun. The money raised from the ticket sales will go to the school.

Chris Williams of Delta Waterfowl said 300 tickets already have been sold at $5 apiece. Williams said hundreds more tickets have been printed and demand for the raffle tickets is much bigger than the club expected.

Requests for tickets has gone beyond the town of Lucama, with some coming from out of state said Williams.

"This is no different than the youth group at the local church needing to raise money and the men at the church know how to cook chicken and so they have a chicken plate sale," Williams said.

Some Delta Waterfowl members have children attending the school and wanted to help the it raise funds, Williams said.

But others aren't so sure, and guns at schools has been part of a national debate since  the Newtown shootings in December.

Robert Simmons, who is opposed to the raffle, said, "The kids are bringing guns to school - they ain't got to bring them for them and auction them off."

The Lucama Fun Fest takes place on Sept. 14 with a cash raffle. The gun Raffle is not hosted by the school, but the Fun Fest will get the proceeds from the gun raffle.

The gun will not be allowed on school property during the Fun Fest.

Superintendent Sean Bulson approved the gun raffle as long as the gun was not brought on campus and the students didn't buy or sell tickets, according to Amber Whitley of Wilson County Schools.

Whitley said, "We fully support the decision that was  made and hope it makes a lot of money for the school."
