JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

A Jacksonville man deputies say was on the run for days is now in custody.

On Monday the Onslow County Sheriff's Office arrested 25-year-old Sherodnie Smith shortly after midnight at the Triangle Motor Inn on U.S. 17 in Jacksonville.

Smith made his first court appearance Monday morning.

Deputies have been searching for Smith since last week, when they say he killed 37-year-old Tiaseer Rambert, of Jacksonville, outside the old Stratosphere night club on Gum Branch Road.

Rambert's family says he was shot in the chest three times. They say the arrest brings them a sense of closure.

"I felt really relieved about it and knowing he could not be out here to hurt anyone else and he was wrong for what he did," said Rambert's mother, Betty Rambert.

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says Smith put up no resistance when deputies came knocking.

"I can just about wager you that either his right shoulder or left shoulder was sore from looking behind him," said Brown.

The sheriff's office identified Smith as a suspect shortly after the murder. The sheriff says he's disappointed Smith didn't turn himself in after he asked for it last week.

"Even if he didn't turn himself in, thank God he's still alive," said Minnie Smith, Smith's great aunt.

Even Smith's relatives tell 9 On Your Side they're thankful for his capture. Meanwhile, Rambert still wonders why her son's life was cut short in the first place. She says her son knew Smith.

"If I could just see him in his face and ask him why did you do it? What reason do you have to take anyone's life? Lord God said thou shall not kill," said Rambert.

Rambert says the many sympathy cards and flowers have helped ease her pain as her family searches for closure.

Smith is in now in the Onslow County Detention Center without bond.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office obtained an arrest warrant for a suspected shooter from Sunday's deadly shooting outside a former Jacksonville nightclub.

The warrant is for 25-year-old Sherodnie Smith of Jacksonville. Smith is the same man deputies named as a person of interest Monday afternoon.  Smith faces one open count of murder.

Rambert's mother, Betty Rambert says, Smith's family members told her he was responsible for killing her son.

"I know his family, but I didn't know him.  They admitted that he did it. He's family member admitted that he did it. They don't know why, they don't know where he's at,  as far as I know, but they say he did it," said Betty.

Rambert's wife, Conbreshia Rambert, says Smith took a good man away from his family.

On Monday, family and friends gathered at Betty's home to remember her son.

"He was a good man.  He was a good father, son,[and] husband. He was just an all around good guy and he's loved by everyone," said Conbreshia.

On Sunday morning deputies responded to a shooting at the old Stratosphere nightclub on Gum Branch Road.

Witnesses tell 9 On Your Side someone was holding a private party at the event hall. While witnesses don't know Smith's motivation for the shooting, they did say Smith showed up in the parking lot just before the shooting.

Family says Tiaseer Rambert died from three gunshot wounds to the chest.

The family tells 9 On Your Side this wasn't the first time he was shot. They say they are still awaiting the trial of the man who shot Rambert seven times last year. Family members say Rambert had permanent damage from that incident and was still recovering when he was killed.

Although, it has been a rough year for the family, they say they will remember the good times with Tiaseer Rambert.

Rambert leaves behind a wife and four children.

Rambert's funeral is set for Saturday at 1p.m. at the Sanders Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

Investigators say if you know of Smith's whereabouts to contact the Onslow County Sheriff's Office at (910) 455-3113 or Crime Stoppers at (910) 938-3273.
