Investigators say alcohol was a factor in a weekend accident in Rankin County that sent eight people, including five children, to the hospital.
The Mississippi highway patrol says the crash between a pick-up truck and an 18-wheeler happened Sunday night at the intersection of Highway 49 and Muse Street near the Star community.
Troopers say four of the children were thrown out of the truck. Monday, one child, a 12 year old boy, was still listed in critical condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Authorities say 53-year-old Edward Sullivan, who was driving the pick-up that was t-boned by the tractor-trailer, was under the influence. He’s still in the hospital and charges are pending.
The impact of the collision ripped the front off the tractor trailer and threw four of the five children from the truck, in which they were riding in.
Rita McNair was in the nearby dollar general. The former first responder says she quickly rushed the scene and tried to stabilize a 7 year-old girl with multiple injuries.
The latest update from UMC is that Edward Sulivan is still in the ICU. The 12 year old boy is also in the ICU. The 10 year old boy, the 7 and 5 year old girls will possibly be released today and are recovering fine.
