Neighbors in a small Mississippi Delta town are mourning after the murder of a senior citizen, found stabbed to death. The crime happened Tuesday in the town of Hollandale.
Neighbors call 71-year-old Benny Haynes the "grandfather" of the community. Suddenly, Tuesday, Haynes was found dead inside his home. Police say he was murdered.
"They found the body lying on the floor," says Hollandale Police Chief John Delaney.
It took only hours for police to nab their suspect. Hernandez Richardson, who police say lived right around the corner from Haynes, confessed to the crime.
"He's in custody now, charged with Capital Murder," says Chief Delaney.
Hanynes' home was still marked with crime scene tape Thursday. Behind that tape, neighbors say, is evidence--evidence that Haynes was a great man.
"Mr. Haynes was a community guy," says a neighbor named Kenya. "He was real friendly. He was the type to help you. He was the type to always keep a smile on everybody's face. He was the type that, some of us didn't have a grandfather, he was just like that. He was just a good person. He was a town's person, and everybody liked him."
"He had a vegetable garden," says Chief Delaney. "He used to raise tomatoes and just have them on the outside in the public for the community. They could just go by and get tomatoes if they would like, and it was free. He was just raising a tomato garden for the public."
Those tomatoes still sit on the picnic table in Haynes' front yard. The ones still on the vine are drying out. This community says they lost someone truly special.
Haynes' body has been brought to the State Crime Lab in Jackson for an autopsy.
