Planes will not depart or arrive two weekends at Tri-Cities Regional Airport

BLOUNTVILLE, TN (WJHL) -

It's very rare, but planes will not be landing or taking off two weekends in September at the Tri-Cities Regional Airport.

This happens once every 30 years, but airport officials have been planning to repave the runway for about four years now. They were able to fund the project through the Federal Aviation Airport Improvement Program. About 60,000 planes land and take off at the airport and officials say if they were to hold off it could become a hazard for flying.

"Thankfully the runway has a lot more life than typically a road, but after awhile it does start to develop cracks in the runway and the pavement, so if it's not addressed eventually those cracks will grow into potholes and bigger areas that would not be safe for aircraft," said Executive Director Patrick Wilson.

There will be no flights starting Friday, September 13 at 8 P.M. to Monday, September 16 at 9 A.M. and again Friday, September 20 at 8 P.M. to Monday, September 23 at 9 A.M.
