WJTV News Channel 12 - Manhunt is a reminder for parents

Manhunt is a reminder to update school contact information

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough County Schools placed 18 schools on modified lock down during a manhunt for a gunman Friday morning.

The schools, in and around the University of South Florida area, were on lock down until the suspect was shot and killed during a dramatic shootout.

During the modified lock down, students went about life as usual, for the most part. Students stayed inside their classrooms and outside activities were limited. Some activities, like PE, were moved inside.

Area principals say parents were supportive of the lock down and understood it was necessary to keep their children safe. But some parents complained they weren't notified of the lock down and had no idea there was a gunman in the area.

School district officials say they notified parents using an automated phone system. The system called parents throughout the whole process with updates. Sometimes, though, parents don't get those messages because they have not updated their phone number with their childrens' school, said Tanya Arja, spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County School District.

This is a good reminder, she said, for parents to update their emergency phone number. And, remember, you may want to list a cell phone number instead of your home phone.
