Virginia Tech offering winter session for students, non-students

BLACKSBURG, VA -

Students and professors getting ready for class at Virginia Tech today will soon have another option to consider, winter session.

Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors approved it Monday. The sessions will take place when students are usually gone from campus in January. Residential halls, and some dining halls normally closed, will be put to use.

Students, including those not enrolled at Virginia Tech, will be able to register for general courses, study abroad or enroll in unique classes not offered any other time of the school year. "Students are going to get more options for not only existing courses but they're going to be getting some new offerings that lend themselves to this kind of intensive, emergent approach," said Virginia Tech provost Dr. Mark McNamee. "I think any kind of innovation like that is good for our students."

Winter session will last three weeks, that's even shorter than the six week summer sessions. Students will only be able to earn three credits over the compressed course but it gives them an opportunity to get a class they're missing sooner rather than later. "I actually think it's a good idea, especially as a senior," said Elizabeth Loftin. "My dad was just saying make sure you're on track to graduate because my only option would be summer classes and I wouldn't get to graduate with everyone."

Taking part winter session can help students finish faster and save them on their overall college costs. Tuition and fees are being offered 10% cheaper than during a regular semester.
