JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

The driver of an SUV that hit an Onslow County school bus Tuesday morning will be charged with reckless driving and driving left of center.

Michael Valderrama told troopers he fell asleep when he went left of center and hit the school bus.

It happened around 7:15 a.m. in Onslow County.

The #28 bus was headed to Southwest High School when it was struck in a head-on collision on Maplehurst Road.

"Seven students were checked out at the hospital," said Suzie Ulbrich, Onslow County Schools spokesperson.

Onslow County Schools tells 9 On Your Side that 26 students were on the bus. There were no major injuries to any of the students on the bus or the bus driver. Parents of students on the bus were immediately notified. The school also put out an emergency all call to Southwest parents.

Onslow County Emergency Management Director Norm Bryson says Valderrama was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Troopers say he had a broken leg and foot.
