Hanging Rock's Sullivan Tees It Up for USA Team

Posted: Updated:

It's the Ryder Cup for PGA Club Professionals--the 26th PGA Cup will tee off from Norththumberland England this weekend. Hanging Rock(Salem) PGA professional Chip Sullivan is representing the Red, White and Blue on the ten player United States team.

They will battle a Great Britain and Ireland team of Club pros over the three-day event.  Chip has been in this competition before--by virtue of his PGA Club Pro National Championship finishes-but this event remains one of the most significant to the Troutville resident. Chip says that when the USA jerseys start arriving and you realize you playing for your country, you start to put the event in perspective. He called it a "life memory" to represent your country in an event like this.

Chip and his wife Kari are at Slaley Hall's Hunting Course--which has hosted a combined 15 European tour and Senior tour events.  The United States last lost the cup back in 2005 in Ireland but regained it two years later in a match that Sullivan was a part of. For his part Sullivan wants no part of losing the cup, and can't wait to tee it up with tradition and pride of United States golf on the line. He reminds everyone that courses in England play a lot differently than they do in the states, and the European team will have that advantage this time around.

The competition is scheduled to start Friday the 20th, with Sullivan expected to be part of the first competition, a four-ball round--Friday AM.
