George W. Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to Gambia and the brother of the late Alex Haley, will speak a joint Founders Day Convocation for Alcorn State University and Chamberlain-Hunt Academy.
The convocation will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the Oakland Memorial Chapel on Alcorn's Lorman campus.
Alcorn and Chamberlain-Hunt annually celebrate their founding and roots to Oakland College. Oakland College founded in 1830 is the progenitor of both institutions_- Alcorn in 1871 and Chamberlain-Hunt in 1879.
Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II says Alex Haley, who died in 1992, will be posthumously awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Brown says George Haley will be presented the Alcorn Bravery Award for meritorious public service.
George Haley was ambassador from Oct. 15, 1998 to July 14, 2001.
