National Wildlife Refuge Proposed At Reservoir

Posted: Updated:
Jackson - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a new national wildlife refuge at the Ross Barnett Reservoir.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that it would include up to 5,000 acres between the reservoir and Lakeland Drive.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation owns more than half the land but would give it to Fish and Wildlife if the refuge is approved. Other land would be protected through partners and willing landowners.
Spokeswoman Connie Dickard says the federal agency will hold a meeting Oct. 3 at the Flowood Public Library to hear what the public wants from such a refuge.
