Vicksburg's Police Call for Information in Unsolved Homicide

Vicksburg, MS -

It's a case Warren County authorities first started investigating last year when a woman was reported missing by her family.

The 30-year-old mother was supposed to pick up her child from a relative's house, but never showed up, according to Vicksburg police.

Shanell Stowers's skeletal remains were found in March in a wooded area off the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

She had been missing since October of 2012, Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.

"That homicide is one of eight that we have had in this community in the last four years and the other seven are solved," Chief Armstrong said.

Armstrong

is putting out a call for public information. He's asking people to either call the Vicksburg Police Department with more details or use the Crimestoppers Tipline (601-355-8477).

"She was out running some errands and she didn't return home. Again the Warren County Sheriff's Department was alerted because she lived out in the county at the time," Chief Armstrong said.

Police call her death "brutal" but would not go into details.

"That's part of the investigation and we don't want to reveal too much information. We certainly don't want to do anything to compromise the case," Chief Armstrong said.

Authorities say Stowers's vehicle was also found, abandoned, near the Warren County line - around the time she went missing.
