Roadway Worries

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday, September 24, 2013, Latrice Westbrook on behalf of Jackson Mayor, Chokwe Lumumba, sent the following response about addressing the repairs needed for the Brookwood Drive Bridge:

"The City is looking into immediate avenues to address the issues with the bridge located on Brookwood Drive (off of McDowell Road). We are going to look into restrictions, first, by reducing the weight limit of vehicles that cross the bridge and ask any vehicles that do not meet the weight limit to take alternate routes, “ said Engineer of the Public Works Department, Charles Williams. “The City is also looking into funding sources to correct and repair the bridge by 2014."

A Jackson resident contacted us worried about a bridge in her neighborhood.  The woman says it is cracked and could be dangerous to drivers.

The bridge is located in South Jackson over Hardy Creek on Brookwood and Monticello Drives.

"It’s pretty rough.  It’s hard on the cars especially," expresses Marllana Estelle.

Estelle uses this bridge every day.  She says the cracks and potholes worry her, especially when she sees school buses driving on this popular road.

"I have kids and grand-kids out here on these streets and so does everybody else," explains Estelle.

The wooden guardrail is old and weak.  It moves with a slightest touch.

"It’s not about where you're trying to go.  It’s about if you get there in piece or not," Estelle tells News Channel 12.

She recalls sometimes cars won't travel across the bridge at the same time.

When asked if she’s notified the city of this issue, Estelle replied, "I have not.  I didn't know if it would do any good or not.”

We contacted the city to see if it has received complaints about this bridge or if workers are looking into fixing the problem.  No one has returned our message.

If you need to report a problem or request service in the city of Jackson, you can call 311.  For more information, click here.
