Food Stamp Fraud

A man has pleaded not guilty in federal court to lying on food stamp applications in a case originating in Lauderdale County.

Otis C. Bolden pleaded not guilty to five charges on Friday in U.S. District Court in Jackson.

Bolden was charged with lying on food stamp applications over three years by representing that nobody in his household had been convicted of a drug-related felony since Aug. 22, 1996.

Anyone convicted of a drug related felony after Aug. 22, 1996, is prohibited from receiving benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.

Prosecutors say Bolden had been convicted of such a crime since that date.
