Efren Afante, weekend evening meteorologist at WJTV News Channel 12
Efren joined the WJTV News Channel 12 team as the weekend evening meteorologist in September of 2013. You can watch him Saturdays at 6pm and 10pm and Sundays at 5:30pm and 10 pm. Efren is originally from Blauvelt, Rockland County, New York.
Efren is no stranger to severe and unusual weather. He worked as an undergraduate research assistant with the University of Oklahoma, School of Meteorology, SMART-R mobile radars as a science operator, driver and navigator for 4 years. During that time, he operated in many National Science Foundation funded projects, sampling and analyzing severe storms, tornadoes and hurricanes. One of his many field campaigns included participating in the VORTEX2 research project in 2010. While at OU, he experienced tornadoes right in his back yard. Tornadoes came through the Norman/Moore Oklahoma neighborhoods each May from 2010-2013. He has worked with the University of Florida and DARPA for the last 3 summers working with the mobiles radars in lightning detection research.
He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Geography, with a minor in Meteorology in August of 2013. He also holds an Associate's Degree of Science in Engineering Physics from Oklahoma City Community College. He is a weather nerd and hockey fanatic. He looks forward to talks and weather demonstrations to elementary, high school and college students.
