Northside goes pink for breast cancer awareness

ROANOKE -

Northside High School football players will walk out on the field Friday night with pink on their sleeves and names of heroes on their backs.

"Wearing the pink it's always different," says Austin Fisher, junior at Northside. "It's a special game."

Fisher is a junior at Northside High and is wearing Kathy Joyner's name on his jersey. Joyner passed away four years ago after fighting against breast cancer. Joyner's son played football on the team and it's how the idea started.

More than 50 pink jerseys will be on the field and 42 of those will have names of people who survived or passed away from cancer.

The coach has even taken part asking his players who he considers part of his family if they would wear his grandmother and grandfather's names on their jerseys.

Al Joyner says he's overwhelmed with joy and sadness knowing that Kathy won't be able to sit next to him and see how much this event has grown.

"The last several times we've had these games it's very emotional," says Al. "It brings back lots of memories."

And it's also an emotional time for these players who say they're playing for more than a win ...

"It's awesome we can play for such an important cause" says Ben Plunkett, a senior at Northside.

"You can just feel it in the air the whole crowd all the fans those moments you won't forget," says Ezra Waddey, senior at Northside.
