Blue Ridge Parkway and government shutdown

Posted: Updated:
DOWNTOWN ROANOKE, VA -

If no agreement is reached in Congress by midnight, more than 400 national parks all across the nation will not reopen tomorrow.

It was announced this afternoon that if a government shutdown does take place, roads on the Blue Ridge Parkway will remain open. However, all lodges, information centers and campgrounds along the parkway will close.

People who are camping or staying at these places will have 48 hours to make other plans before they're forced to leave.

"Anytime is a bad time, but right now is really a bad time with the leaves changing and just the amount of time people do spend on the parkway," says Jeff Mullen, who enjoys the parkway with his family. "Right now probably more than anytime."

"Certainly October is one of our busiest months of the year because of the fall colors and all of the great festivals and all," says Landon Howard, president of the Roanoke Valley Convention Investors Bureau. "We wish it could've been in February instead, but it is what it is. We hope it will be a quick resolution and we can get people out enjoying the parkway again."
