Raleigh groups march to reduce youth imprisonment

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Several groups are coming together in Raleigh to push for a reduction in youth imprisonment.

On Friday, NC HEAT, the Youth Organizing Institute and the Education Justice Alliance are organizing a march from Washington Elementary to Central Prison.

It's one in a series of events part of the National Week of Action Against School Push Out.

Earlier this week, parents, students and community groups in Wake County began calling for a moratorium on out-of-school suspensions for some offenses and making recommendations to reduce the number of suspensions in the area.

In the 2011-2012 school year, more than 14,000 students in Wake County were suspended. Organizers say black students in Wake County make up less than a quarter of the school population but get more than 60 percent of all suspensions.
