A state crime scene unit spent much of the day on Vine Street in Port Gibson collecting evidence from the murder victim's home.
Investigators tell us the 64 year-old retired Port Gibson high school band director James Curry was shot and killed overnight Wednesday by Bobby Thomas, who was no stranger.
According to neighbors, Thomas had been living with Curry.
"It's just amazing how people can kill people like that for no reason," said another one woman, who was in high school when Curry was band director.
Authorities tell us Thomas was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after police chief Calvin Jackson shot and wounded him.
Chief Jackson is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which the Mississippi bureau of investigation is leading.
