An intense manhunt that begun early Thursday morning dragged on into the night, as dozens of heavily armed law enforcement officers from local and state agencies searched a wooded area in rural Hinds county looking for accused murderer and kidnapper Michael Wright.
The 37 year-old man has been on the run since authorities say he shot and killed 55 year-old Jerry Brent in his Utica home and abducting his niece, 34 year-old Sharice Latham, Wednesday morning.
While the search was going on last night Wright and Latham apparently never left the area where she was kidnapped.
They spent the night hiding in the woods.
This morning Latham managed to make a dramatic escape.
Authorities say when Wright stopped to use the restroom, Latham got behind the wheel of her car and quickly drove home to her surprised but relieved family.
She had some scratches and bruises but her relatives tell us Latham went to a local hospital to get checked out. She is said to be doing fine.
In addition to the murder and kidnapping charges he faces in Hinds County, Wright is out of jail on a $500,000 bond for a December 2013 murder in Panola County. And Ridgeland police have an outstanding out for him. Latham filed stalking charges against Wright back in August.
