MIAMI, FL -

A 6-year-old Central Florida boy drowned on a Carnival cruise ship Sunday afternoon while at sea, according to a Miami Dade Police report.

Detectives say the child, identified as Qwentyn Hunter, of Winter Garden, was in the pool with his 10-year-old brother when the drowning occurred.  Passengers immediately pulled the boy from the water and initiated resuscitative efforts. They were not successful, and the boy died at the scene.

The family was on a four-day Caribbean cruise out of Miami. The ship arrived Monday morning at Port Miami.  There were 3,094 guests on the ship and approximately 1,100 staff members.

Carnival Cruise Lines released this statement, "Yesterday, Oct. 13, on board the Carnival Victory, while the ship was at sea on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise, a six-year-old boy drowned in the mid ship pool. He was at the pool area with other family members at the time. Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time. The company’s Care Team is providing assistance and support."

Police say at this time, the incident appears to be accidental and no foul play is suspected. The investigation is ongoing.

The Miami-based cruise company has 24 ships that attract an average of 4.5 million passengers a year.
