The ETSU men's soccer team suffered its first road loss in nearly two months, enduring a narrow 1-0 setback at Northern Kentucky Wednesday night. The match marked just the second conference loss of the season for the Bucs, who still have possession of second place in the Atlantic Sun standings.
Despite controlling possession throughout the game's opening fifteen minutes, ETSU was unable to find the back of the net in the first half, entering intermission knotted at 0-0.
A second-half goal by Northern Kentucky was too much for ETSU to overcome, as the Norse (6-3-6, 3-1-1) avoided its seventh tie of the season, escaping with the win.
NKU's Yaw Addai netted the game-winner in the 60th minute, sending a low shot from ten yards out past ETSU senior goalkeeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland).
Five Buccaneers (6-5-3, 4-2-0) recorded shots in the match, with David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.) leading the way with three attempts, including a header in the 81st minute that nearly acted as the equalizer for the Bucs.
Fellow senior Jonny Campbell (Johnson City, Tenn.) also saw a solid scoring opportunity just minutes earlier. On a set piece from 18 yards out, Campbell caught NKU goalkeeper A.J. Fleak off guard, but sent a shot just over the cross bar.
The loss snapped a program-record six-match road unbeaten streak for the Bucs. Prior to Wednesday night, ETSU had not lost on the road since falling at South Carolina Aug. 30.
NKU remained unbeaten at home, moving to 1-0-3 at NKU Stadium on the year.
ETSU will look to bounce back when they return home Wednesday, Oct. 30 to host USC Upstate at 7:00 p.m.
The Bucs are one point behind first-place Florida Gulf Coast in the A-Sun standings, with Lipscomb and NKU in third and fourth place, respectively.
